Ingredient Notes

  • Peaches: I’ve tested this recipe with both fresh and frozen peaches and both turn out beautifully. If it’s peach season, go with fresh peaches for the juiciest flavor and texture. I like to peel mine, but leaving the skin on is totally up to you. Using frozen? Let them thaw slightly before baking.
  • Cornstarch: Tossing the peaches in bit of cornstarch helps soak up the juices from the peaches so the filling isn’t too runny.
  • Oats: Rolled or quick oats both work.
  • Almond Flour: Keeps this crisp naturally gluten-free and adds a soft texture. It’s one of my favorite gluten-free flours that you’ll find in recipes like my Homemade Nutter Butter Cookies and Peanut Butter and Jelly Bars.
  • Walnuts & Almonds: These add a nice crunchy texture. You can use one, or both, or substitute for your other favorite nuts.
  • Maple Syrup: Adds all natural sweetness.
  • Vegan Butter: Helps bring the crisp together with that golden finish. Coconut oil would work too.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds warmth and enhances the peach flavor.
  • Spices: A mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt ties it all together.

Substitutions & Variations

This recipe is super easy to customize based on what you have on hand. Here are a few simple swaps & variations:

  • Add protein powder: Add one scoop of protein powder into the topping,
  • No vegan butter? I’ve swapped it for melted coconut oil and it worked great.
  • Make it nut-free: Swap the almond flour for oat flour and use seeds (like pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds) instead of nuts.
  • Adjust the sweetness: Depending on how sweet your peaches are, you can toss them with a little maple syrup.

Megan’s Tips

  • Use ripe peaches. Fresh, in-season peaches makes all the difference! The riper they are, the sweeter and more flavorful your crisp will be. For frozen peaches, let them thaw a bit before using.
  • Adjust the cornstarch based on your peaches. This is a little trick to get the perfect filling consistency. When using frozen peaches, I recommend using 1 tablespoon of cornstarch because they will release extra moisture as they bake. If you’re using fresh peaches, 1/2 tablespoon is all you’ll need.

How to Serve Peach Crisp

This healthy peach crisp can be enjoyed any time of day – for breakfast or dessert! Here are some of my favorite ways to serve it:

  • a scoop of vegan vanilla ice cream (my personal favorite!)
  • coconut whipped cream
  • vegan yogurt for a breakfast option

FAQs

Can I use frozen peaches to make peach crisp?

Yes! Frozen peaches work great, I’ve made this healthy peach crisp recipe several times using frozen peaches. Just make sure to thaw them slightly before baking so they get soft and juicy.

Do I need to peel peaches to make peach crisp?

It’s totally up to you. I usually peel mine, but it’s a personal preference.

How do you keep peach crisp from getting soggy?

The key is to add cornstarch. The cornstarch thickens the juices from the peaches into a delicious jammy filling.

How do you store leftover peach crisp?

Store leftover berry crisp in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. Note: the topping will soften as it sits. To bring back some of the crisp texture, reheat it in the oven. The microwave works too, but the topping won’t be as crisp.
