Why Make a Christmas Cookie Box?

A Christmas cookie box is more than just a gift—it’s a thoughtful and festive way to celebrate the holidays. Here are a few reasons why you should make one this year:

  • Fun to make (with kids, too!). Throw on some holiday music and make a day of it!
  • Great for gifting. A homemade present that’s guaranteed to bring joy.
  • Festive centerpiece. The perfect addition to your holiday dessert table.

How to Make a Christmas Cookie Box

1. Pick Your Cookie Recipes

You don’t need to bake all 12 cookies—unless you’re feeling ambitious like me. Choose anywhere from 2 to 12 recipes to bake based on your preferences.

I recommend mixing up the shapes, sizes, and flavors for variety. It also helps make your cookie box more visually appealing.

My 12 Days of Christmas Cookies includes these vegan and gluten-free cookie recipes:

  1. Nutter Butter Reindeer Cookies
  2. Iced Gingerbread Cookies
  3. The Best Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies
  4. Melted Snowman Cookies
  5. Easy 3 Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies
  6. Vegan Hot Chocolate Cookies
  7. Chocolate Peppermint Cookies
  8. Pistachio Chocolate Chip Cookies
  9. Hot Chocolate Cookie Cups
  10. Healthy Peanut Butter Blossoms
  11. No Bake Chocolate Turtle Cookies
  12. Chocolate Peppermint Cookie Cups

2. Bake the Cookies

Plan a fun and festive baking day with family and friends.

Timing is everything during the holidays. Here are three options to stay stress-free:

  • Bake in advance. Many of these cookies freeze well, so you can prep them a few weeks ahead of time by baking the cookies, letting them cool, and placing them in an airtight bag in the freezer. Then, thaw when needed.
  • Bake fresh. Make them a day in advance or the morning of, then hand out your Christmas cookie boxes for the ultimate freshness.
  • Mix it up. Freeze some cookies and bake others fresh for a balance.

Whatever you do, make sure you have fun with it!

3. Assemble the Cookie Box

Creating a beautiful cookie box is all about presentation.

This is the cookie tray I used in the pictures above which would be perfect for putting out on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

For gifting, I use these brown boxes. They have a window so you can get a peek of what’s inside. It’s great for dropping off to neighbors and gifting to family and friends in town. You could also use festive cookie tins to package the cookies.

These holiday cookie boxes are a bit more decorative, but cute. These are cute too. Or these gingerbread house shaped cookie boxes.

For an extra touch, this Christmas parchment paper is perfect for lining the boxes.

These small gingerbread house treat boxes are adorable—ideal for fitting 2-3 cookies. I personally love using them to hand out homemade chocolate truffles.

If you’re gifting singular cookies, these Christmas cookie bags are a cute option.

4. Add Decorative Touches

Adding decorative touches is one of my favorite parts—it brings your cookie box to life!

I love adding a festive touch by tying ribbons around the cookies, tucking in candy canes, and scattering fresh cranberries for a pop of color. Sprigs of rosemary throughout the box add a charming, seasonal vibe.

For the finishing touch, I decorate the outside of the box with red ribbon and a sprig of greenery, like rosemary, to tie it all together. These plain gift tags are cute for addressing the cookie boxes, or you can opt for these more decorative gift tags.

Feeling ambitious? You can even add in some chocolate truffles or chocolate bark to mix things up. These extra treats bring variety and a touch of elegance. Need inspiration? Here are some crowd-pleasers to include:

Tips for Stress-Free Holiday Baking

  • Keep it simple. Many of these recipes are beginner-friendly and quick to make.
  • Turn up the holiday vibes. Throw on some Christmas music while you bake to set the mood! So many of my fondest memories are of baking Christmas cookies while dancing around the kitchen. Santa usually ended up eating them though, LOL.
  • Gift with love. Homemade cookies are the perfect solution for those hard-to-shop-for people. I have to admit, I’m not the best gift giver (God skilled me more with baking), but I know for a fact that everyone loves my homemade cookie boxes!
