Papaya Yogurt Bowl
This refreshing Papaya Yogurt Bowl is made with ripe papaya that’s filled with creamy yogurt and topped with fresh fruit and crunchy granola for a healthy tropical breakfast that’s ready in just 5 minutes!

For years I thought I didn’t like papaya. Every papaya I tried tasted so bland! But once I had a ripe papaya… everything changed. It was juicy, naturally sweet, and tasted completely different. If you’ve tried papaya before and weren’t a fan, I’m here to tell you: don’t give up until you’ve had a truly ripe one!
If you’ve watched my Instagram stories lately, you’ve probably seen me eating this papaya yogurt bowl quite a bit. It’s quickly become one of my favorite healthy breakfasts – I crave it basically every morning! It’s refreshing, takes just 5 minutes to make, and tastes very tropical (which I love). What Does Papaya Taste Like?
Papaya has a juicy, mildly sweet flavor, with a soft texture. A lot of people describe it as a cross between mango and cantaloupe, and I agree with that comparison!
How to Pick a Ripe Papaya

When shopping for papaya, look for:
- Yellow-orange skin (the more orange = the sweeter it will taste)
- Slight softness when gently pressed
- Minimal green coloring
Avoid:
- Completely green papayas
- Large bruises
- Mushy texture
Ingredient Notes
- Papaya: Look for a ripe papaya that is mostly yellow-orange and slightly soft when gently pressed. The sweeter the papaya, the better the bowl.
- Yogurt: I like using a thick, creamy dairy-free yogurt for the best texture.
- Granola: I love adding homemade granola or peanut butter granola for crunch.
- Fresh Fruit: Use whatever you’ve got! Fresh berries, kiwi, mango, pineapple, or passion fruit all work great and add extra color and flavor.
Flavor Ideas
- Tropical Papaya Yogurt Bowl: Top with mango, pineapple, kiwi, passion fruit, and coconut flakes.
- High-Protein Papaya Yogurt Bowl: Use a high-protein yogurt and top with hemp seeds and a drizzle of almond butter.
- Chocolate Papaya Yogurt Bowl: Top with cacao nibs and homemade chocolate granola.
- Papaya Matcha Yogurt Bowl: Mix a teaspoon of matcha into your yogurt before filling the papaya. SO GOOD!

Megan’s Tips
- Make sure your papaya is ripe! For years I was convinced that I didn’t like papaya, but then I realized I just hadn’t had a ripe one. A ripe papaya is slightly soft with a yellow/orange skin (not green!). If your papaya isn’t very sweet, add a drizzle of maple syrup.
- Use a thicker yogurt. Thick dairy-free yogurt stays inside the papaya better and creates a creamier texture.
- Build your papaya bowl right before serving. Otherwise the granola can soften if it sits on the yogurt for too long.
Topping Ideas
One of my favorite things about making this papaya yogurt bowl is getting creative with the toppings! Mix and match your favorite toppings depending on what you have on hand.

- Fresh Fruit: Papaya pairs really well with strawberries, banana, mango, kiwi, and berries.
- Crunchy Toppings: Granola, coconut flakes, sliced almonds, chopped walnuts, pumpkin seeds, and cacao nibs.
- Seeds: Hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flaxseeds.
- Nut Butter: Almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, and macadamia nut butter. Make your own homemade nut butters to drizzle on top!
- Extra Sweetness: Maple syrup, honey, date syrup, and lime juice.

Yes, papaya is very healthy! It’s packed with vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants that can help support digestion, boost your immune system, and promote healthy skin.
The secret is using a ripe papaya. If your papaya doesn’t taste good, it’s probably because it isn’t fully ripe. Wait until the skin is mostly yellow-orange and slightly soft. If you still don’t like the flavor of papaya, try pairing it with yogurt, granola, and sweet fruits like mango or berries.
Yes! Papaya contains papain, a digestive enzyme that helps break down proteins. I love eating papaya first thing in the morning because it’s light, hydrating, and gut-friendly.
