  • Medjool Dates: Soft, chewy, and naturally sweet. The base of the “spider’s body”.
  • Nut Butter: I stuff the dates with peanut butter, but almond or cashew butter would be delicious too.
  • Chocolate Chips: To melt and dip the dates in. Use your favorite dairy-free chocolate chips or chocolate bar.
  • Cacao Nibs: To add a little texture and crunch to the “spider’s body.”
  • Pretzels: Snapped in half to make the spider legs. I use these gluten-free pretzels.
  • Candy Eyes: Use edible candy eyes or small white chocolate chips to bring these spooky-cute spiders to life!

How to Make Stuffed Date Spiders

  1. Prep the dates: Slice each date lengthwise and remove the pit (be careful not to cut all the way through). Line a baking sheet or plate with parchment paper.
  2. Stuff with nut butter: Add a spoonful of nut butter to the center of each date, then press them closed slightly. Place in the freezer until the nut butter hardens, about 20-30 minutes.
  3. Melt the chocolate: Add chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until melted. Optional: add 1 tsp coconut oil to help thin the chocolate for easier dipping.
  4. Coat the dates: Use a fork to dip each date into the melted chocolate, coating it completely, then place onto the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Decorate: Before the chocolate sets, press four pretzel pieces into each side of the date to make the spider legs. Sprinkle cacao nibs on top for texture, then add candy eyes or small white chocolate chips for the eyes. Chill in the fridge for 5-10 minutes, or until the chocolate hardens. Enjoy!

Megan’s Tips

  • Use fresh medjool dates: Fresh medjool dates work best since they’re naturally gooey and easy to stuff. If your dates feel dry, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes, then pat dry.
  • Work quickly: Add the pretzel legs, cacao nibs, and eyes before the chocolate hardens.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days. Perfect for prepping a healthy Halloween treat in advance!

These spooky-cute spiders are guaranteed to be a hit at Halloween parties! Add them to your dessert boards, give them away to trick-or-treaters, or snack on them yourself. They’re fun to make, kid-approved, and incredibly delicious. Enjoy!!
