These rich, creamy, and indulgent chocolate truffles are about to blow your mind!
I know what you’re thinking… avocado in chocolate truffles? Trust me on this one. If you’ve tried my viral chocolate avocado pudding, then you already know how delicious avocado can be in desserts.
Funny story: I brought these truffles to a party, and within minutes they were gone. Afterward, I told everyone that they were made from avocado…I wish I could upload a photo of their faces—they couldn’t believe it!
How beautiful do they look on a plate? All those vibrant colors — all plant-based! Plus, they would make the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for your valentine (or yourself).
Avocado is the base of these truffles, giving them a creamy texture without the need for heavy cream. It’s combined with melted chocolate and naturally sweetened with maple syrup, plus a touch of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt to enhance all the flavors.
If you’re not a fan of avocados, don’t worry, follow this recipe and my expert tips and you won’t be able to tell there’s avocado in it at all.
Why You’ll Love Chocolate Avocado Truffles
- Melt-In-Your-Mouth Texture: You’ll be amazed at how rich, smooth, and creamy these chocolate truffles are thanks to the secret ingredient: avocado!
- Guilt-Free Treat: Packed with healthy fats from avocado and antioxidants from dark chocolate—these truffles are vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, and naturally sweetened with maple syrup.
- Easy to Make: Made with only 5 ingredients, they’re quick and easy to make.
- Customizable: Get creative and add your favorite toppings like crushed nuts, coconut flakes, or cocoa powder (more on that below).
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Avocado: Creates a creamy base and provides fiber and healthy fats.
- Dark Chocolate: Use your favorite high-quality dark chocolate bar or chocolate chips for the best flavor. I use vegan and refined sugar-free dark chocolate.
- Maple Syrup: Adds natural sweetness.
- Coconut Oil: This is optional, but I like to use a little bit to help melt the chocolate smoothly. Use refined coconut oil for neutral flavor.
- Vanilla Extract: Enhances the overall flavor.
How to Make Chocolate Avocado Truffles
- Melt the Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips and coconut oil (if using) in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted (you can also use a double boiler method to melt the chocolate if preferred).
- Process the Mixture: Add the avocado, melted chocolate, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt to a food processor. Pulse until smooth and creamy (you may need to stop and scrape down the sides). Transfer the mixture to a bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour, or freeze for 10-15 minutes, until the mixture is firm enough to roll into balls.
- Roll into Truffles: Scoop out 1 tablespoon of the mixture and use your hands to roll it into a ball. Coat in desired toppings, and enjoy!
Expert Tips
- Ripe Avocados: Use avocados that are just starting to ripen for the best flavor and texture. Overripe avocados will have a stronger flavor.
- Blend Well: Don’t rush the blending process! Let it blend for at least a minute or more so the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
- Taste and Adjust: After blending, taste and adjust as needed. If you prefer more sweetness, add extra maple syrup. Note that the flavors will continue to develop as time goes by (…one of my favorite songs from the movie Casablanca…I am totally in the Valentine’s Day feels!).
Coating Chocolate Truffles
This is where the fun begins! Get creative and coat your truffles in:
- Cocoa Powder: For more chocolate flavor.
- Chopped Nuts: Such as pistachios, hazelnuts, almonds, or walnuts.
- Freeze-Dried Strawberry Powder: For a burst of fruity sweetness to balance the richness of the chocolate. I think freeze-dried raspberry powder would work well too.
- Shredded Coconut: For a tropical twist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you taste the avocado?
I don’t think so! Neither do my friends or family who have tried it. Just be sure to use an avocado that is just starting to ripen (not too hard, not too soft).
Are these chocolate truffles healthy?
Technically, yes! Especially compared to traditional chocolate truffles that are made with heavy cream. These truffles are made with avocado which is loaded with vitamins and healthy fats. Plus, they are naturally sweetened, making them a guilt-free treat!
