What Does Chocolate Avocado Pudding Taste Like?

If you’ve never tried avocado in a dessert before, this is the perfect recipe to start with! This chocolate avocado pudding genuinely tastes like a rich, creamy chocolate pudding – not avocado. The avocado’s job is simply to create that silky-smooth texture you’d normally get from ingredients like heavy cream or dairy.

Ingredient Notes

You only need 5 simple ingredients to make this healthy chocolate avocado pudding!

  • Avocados: The star ingredient! Avocado creates the creamy texture of this pudding. Your avocados should be soft enough to blend easily but not overly brown inside. I’ve found that a bright green avocado that’s just starting to ripen creates the creamiest texture and mildest flavor.
  • Non-Dairy Milk: I usually use unsweetened soy milk, but oat milk, cashew milk, or almond milk also work well.
  • Cocoa Powder: I recommend using a cocoa powder that you love. I typically use Trader Joe’s cocoa powder because it’s rich without tasting overly bitter. Just like with my healthy homemade chocolate syrup, the quality of your cocoa powder makes all the difference!
  • Maple Syrup: Naturally sweetens this pudding while keeping it free from refined sugar.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the chocolate flavor and gives this pudding that classic dessert taste.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Maple Syrup: I’ve tried this recipe swapping the maple syrup for agave and it tastes great. Date syrup also works.
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Twist: Add 1–2 tablespoons of peanut butter before blending for a chocolate peanut butter pudding.

How to Make Chocolate Avocado Pudding

This chocolate avocado pudding comes together in just a few simple steps.

  1. Add the ingredients to a blender: Add the ripe avocados, non-dairy milk, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract and salt to a high-speed blender or food processor.
  2. Blend until smooth and creamy: Blend until the pudding is completely smooth and silky. You may need to pause and scrape down the sides a few times to make sure everything is fully incorporated. But don’t rush this step! The longer you blend, the creamier the texture becomes. This is what transforms the avocado into a rich, chocolate pudding consistency.
  3. Serve and enjoy: Top the pudding with your favorite toppings, such as fresh berries, crushed nuts, or a dollop of non-dairy whipped cream. Enjoy!

Megan’s Tips

  • Use ripe avocados. Avocados that are underripe may not blend smoothly, while overripe avocados with brown spots can sometimes have a stronger flavor. Look for avocados that are slightly soft when pressed, but still bright green inside.
  • Use a high-quality cocoa powder. Since this recipe only uses a few ingredients, each one really matters! I make this recipe with Trader Joe’s cocoa powder.
  • Blend longer than you think. This is my biggest texture tip! Keep blending until the pudding is completely silky with no avocado pieces remaining. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides.
  • Taste and adjust. If you feel like you can taste the avocado, add more cocoa powder or vanilla extract. If it’s bitter, add more maple syrup. If it’s too thick, add more non-dairy milk.

Toppings

This pudding is delicious on its own, but toppings make it extra special! Some of my favorite toppings include:

  • Fresh berries
  • Coconut whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Cacao nibs
  • Chopped nuts
  • Peanut butter drizzle
  • Shredded coconut

Storage

Store leftover chocolate avocado pudding in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. But for the best texture and flavor, I recommend enjoying it within the first day.

Little note: the color may darken slightly over time since avocado naturally oxidizes, but this is totally normal!

FAQs

Can you taste the avocado in chocolate avocado pudding?

No! This is probably the most common question I get about this recipe (lol!). Once the avocado is blended with cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and maple syrup, the avocado flavor disappears. The avocado is really only there to create that creamy texture, not to add an avocado taste.

Is chocolate avocado pudding healthy?

Yes! This chocolate avocado pudding is made with simple, wholesome ingredients and is a healthier alternative to traditional chocolate pudding recipes.

How long does chocolate avocado pudding last?

Chocolate avocado pudding is best enjoyed within 1–2 days. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep it fresh.
